This is the gateway to the spinal canal. The cerebellum rests right on the back half of this portal. The very last portion of brainstem ends here becoming the spinal cord as it passes through into what is called the neck (cervical).

When brain bulges downward past this landmark we call it the Arnold Chiari malformation.
